Freight economics · winter prep
Better freight numbers do not make downtime cheaper.
OOIDA’s October report shows a September rebound in dry-van spot rates, including a Midwest increase. That is encouraging context for Illinois and Indiana operators, but a regional average is not your next load quote. Our focus at the shop is the part you can plan: the truck’s maintenance needs before winter.
By the numbers
OOIDA Foundation, October 2026 report, printed page 8; data attributed to Truckstop + FTR. Spot rates include fuel surcharges; averages are not individual lane quotes.
Read the numbers without overreading them
OOIDA notes that quarter-end loading may have contributed to the September improvement. The report says more data is needed before drawing a firm conclusion. For a local fleet or owner-operator, the useful question is whether your actual loaded and empty miles, fuel expense and maintenance reserve support the work you are accepting.

What we would put on the shop conversation
Before a busy stretch, separate immediate defects from the preventive work coming due. Tell the service team about hard starts, repeated air-system moisture, changing tire wear or recurring warning lights. Those details help frame an inspection; a headline freight rate cannot tell you what is happening on your truck.
Planned shop time lets you coordinate parts, discuss priorities and arrange the truck’s schedule. An unplanned stop can also mean towing, a missed delivery or a driver waiting away from home. Preventive work cannot eliminate every breakdown, but postponing a known concern is not the same thing as saving money.

Make November your planning window
Ask about batteries and charging, the air system, cooling-system condition, and visibility before sustained cold weather. Follow the vehicle and component manufacturers’ requirements rather than using a single checklist as a service specification.
Effingham, Bedford and Vincennes list truck-service support. If you use our Decatur parts counter, have the unit details and parts list ready; Decatur does not provide truck or trailer repair.

Sources, dates & corrections
Crossroads perspective sections are practical editorial recommendations. Reported facts link to their source; publication dates, event dates and verification dates are kept separate. Call the location to confirm service, parking and visit details. Use official agency guidance for routing and compliance decisions.
This October 30 edition was expanded on October 30, 2026: the Vincennes notice now links to an official county publication of INDOT’s announcement; the full parking award list adds the I-57 local project; and Altamont replaces Galesburg in the current brief. The original Galesburg story remains available at its existing link.
